A Rhinosorus rex? After all, creating one’s own fauna is a good way of avoiding to be dissed for drawing animals weird. That, and chicken.

I really, REALLY, considered making it a chicken, but I chickened out on that.

An escapee from Torgo, or perhaps you’ve been playing ARK?

I’m comfortable saying neither, even though I’m not sure what ARK is. Google tells me it’s a Steam game, and a first person at that. I’ve only every played two games from Steam, Homeworld remastered, which which brought back fond memories of playing the original Homeworld, and Civ 5, which I didn’t like as much as Civ 2. I don’t think I’ll like any game as much as I like Civ 2.

ARK is a first / third person, sandbox survival game on Steam. You start out on an island shore with pretty much nothing, but as you wander around, collecting stones, sticks and berries you get experience and learn patterns for making clothes, tools, structures, weapons and so on, going from thatch huts, stone-tipped spears and arrows to metal structures and fabricated sniper rifles and rocket launchers.

You share the island with dinosaurs and other prehistoric critters (and other players if you are playing an online server), many of which find players ever so tasty, so sometimes survival can be a little more difficult. Eventually, you can hunt and tame some of the beasties, saddling and riding them. You run into visuals like the above comic somewhat regularly – running through a dense jungle only to come face to face with a massive, hungry T. rex. The normal response is to run the other direction, unless you are riding a Rex of your very own. 😀 The game is still under development, but it’s in Early Access and pretty awesome so far.

I never played Civ2, but I’m still a big fan of Civ4, especially with the Beyond the Sword expansion. Civ5 was ok, but I didn’t care for how combat and unit placement was set up. Civ6 seems mostly like a reskin of Civ5, unfortunately. I tried it, when they had a free weekend, and wasn’t terribly impressed.

That actually sounds pretty cool, I like that idea of building up from nothing like that. Is there any situation with you not riding a dinosaur that you could take out a dinosaur who wants to eat you like an unwrapped candy bar?

Civ2 was one of the first computer games I ever played, it, like the original StarCraft, maintains an unfair spot in my top ten video games, because nostalgia. I liked some of the concepts of Civ4, which is the newest one I’ve played, not Civ5 after all, and I never tried the expansions even though I have the discs for them.

Yes, there are quite a few smaller predators that can generally be taken out without any assistance and a little bit of luck / equipment. You will run into more trouble when you take on larger critters like Carnotaurus, Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus. They have the occasional “alpha predators” (currently, special spawns of raptors, carnos and rexes) which are about 7x stronger than their normal counterparts and *will* eat you, wrapped or unwrapped, without a great deal of pre-planning. There are also the apex predators (bosses), which are summoned by collecting certain items and trophies – fire-breathing dragon, albino king kong and a huge spider queen.

Yeah, I get the nostalgia part of it. That’s why I can still turn back to my NES and Sega Genesis days to play things like Shining Force or Wizards & Warriors. Timeless classics!

Haha right! Wizards and Warriors is pretty good. I’d always turn to Deja Vu on the NES to relax, thank god for emulators because I don’t have a system anymore.
